King Henry VIII is the most notorious playboy in France’s history. His story has been retold through films, TV adaptations, books, and many more. If you’re one of the Tudor enthusiasts but have grown tired of the usual depictions, it’s probably time for a new show because Six is a high-energy and entertaining show that tells the story of the six queens! Catherine of Aragon, famously annulled by King Henry, was replaced by the seductress Anne Boleyn. However, Boleyn fails to give King Henry a male heir and commits adultery. She was later beheaded. Many more wives, such as Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleves, Katherin Howard, and Catherine Parr, follow. Did Henry truly love them? The queens battle it out on stage over who had the worst experience with King Henry. The winner takes the lead singer spot. But according to Catherine Parr, why are they all doing this? And what is the point?
“The exuberant queenhood-is-powerful pageant about the wives of Henry VIII was shut down on opening night by the pandemic. Now it’s back, and it totally rules.” – New York Times.
Six carries out a joyful and anachronistic takedown of the patriarchy… brilliant – Broadway World.
There’s much to admire and love. It may not be Masterpiece Theater, but this “Six” is a solid “10” for joy. – Variety.
Six boasts a stellar creative team composed of directors Moss and Jamie Armitage and distinguished choreographer Carre-Ann Ingrouille. Moreover, the touring production will feature an outstanding and talented cast ready to belt it out against one another to win the coveted spot as lead singer. Six, which debuted at Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2017, took a few years before it finally opened on Broadway. In 2021, the production finally arrived in New York, winning several awards, including two Tony Awards and four Drama Desk Awards. With an award-winning score, Six sets itself apart by having the charm of a jukebox musical, except all music and lyrics are original. Some critics found the familiarity quote endearing, hence the numerous positive reviews.
Jesse Green from The New York Times said, “The exuberant queenhood-is-powerful pageant about the wives of Henry VIII was shut down on opening night by the pandemic. Now it’s back, and it totally rules.” Meanwhile, Cassie Tongue from The Guardian couldn’t help but rave about the musical’s main characters, “You come for the Queens, and these queens do not disappoint. Like the musical version of Alexander Hamilton himself, who is Eminem-meets-Sweeney Todd, each of the ex-wives embodies a couple of modern ‘Queenspirations.’” Lastly, Time Out Magazine’s Bianca O’Neill notably loved the music’s familiarity, “ The musical proved that we can still deliver great musical scores without borrowing from history’s best Top 40 tracks.”
