Taking inspiration from very powerful source material, Ohio Theatre takes on the demand of hosting the live staging of the classic tale of Romeo & Juliet. The love affair of Romeo and Juliet has historically been famous as one of the most despairing plays in several decades, with the central characters' passionate infatuation for each other resulting in their own demise. Utilizing Shakespeare and his wife as tools in the musical itself though, the worldwide and brand-new musical, & Juliet, places in a new twist by allowing Juliet to discover what life has to offer after Shakespeare’s classic and empowering her to finally make her own decisions. Wishing to escape Verona with Juliet's equally-committed friends, the cast is introduced to a bigger landscape beyond what the group of friends were used to once they move to Paris, France.
Having been produced four centuries after the original, '& Juliet' also applies modernized storytelling that is more appropriate today. To present its point to the audience, the play showcases a slew of numbers taken from pop music’s top hitmaker, Max Martin. The Swedish producer previously had an idea of creating a musical around all his songs over his career, resulting in the jukebox musical, & Juliet, being created and subsequently having its first run in the year of 2019. Max Martin gave complete freedom in the renditions of his hits to the musical, stating that he “hoped to revive his songs over the years in a new way, and to let audiences feel that even if you have never heard any of my songs, fans could enjoy his music just as much.” The ongoing musical ended up including songs from global singers such as Jessie J, Demi Lovato, P!nk, and Justin Timberlake, among others. Due to its song choices, the play enabled a new way to appeal to a new audience to theater.
