When compared to the original plot of Romeo & Juliet which was presented live roughly four hundred years ago, critics have distinguished the stark modifications that had been made to ‘& Juliet’, a significantly newer production based on the same female lead. Shakespeare’s original narrative revolves around the tragedy that comes about because of rash decision-making and the unbridled passion of two lovers, which results in the poisoning of both Romeo and Juliet. On the other hand, ‘& Juliet’ looks beyond the said tragedy and instead chooses a more positive outlook by concentrating on the endless possibilities of life, even after such tragic experiences.
This messaging is evident in the new showl’s cast of characters, Juliet, and her group of friends, who head to Paris and come to realize their identities not just as individuals, but as powerful women. ‘& Juliet’ is a good feminist perspective through the eyes of Shakespeare’s wife, Anne Hathaway, who takes ownership of her husband’s story and changes the ending of his well-known classic. She gives both old characters from the original story a second opportunity to shine, while adding new and equally strong women to the stage. Going off-script from Romeo & Juliet, the musical is able to incorporate contemporary culture, specifically songs from recent decades, that encapsulate the growing awareness and self-discovery of each of the ladies throughout the production. Even the attire worn by the show’s cast give a nod to Romeo & Juliet, while presenting the contrast between the ongoing musical and the previous classic by using Elizabethan attire and iconography with today’s fashion styles. Each aspect of the show was carefully thought-out to emphasize empowerment and "being able to write your own story".
This February’s limited season of ‘& Juliet’ sees it come to Ohio, where Ohio Theatre of Columbus is proud to be hosting this up-and-coming jukebox musical on Thursday 20th February 2025.
