From the perspective of the central female lead of Shakespeare's iconic tragedy, ‘& Juliet’ takes the classic in a new light in which Juliet chooses to take a different path after she loses the love of her life and Juliet's subsequent learning of the other joys in life she didn't know about throughout her journey to Paris, France. Throughout the musical, she meets both previous acquaintances and brand new acquaintances that were added specifically for the play. Building on the original with contemporary themes, the post-modern play puts a unique twist on the original Shakespearean story and is more fit for the current times.

Shakespeare’s original play has ultimately been known as one of the most tragic stories across multiple generations, with the central characters' zealous devotion for each other ending up in their death by their own hands. Utilizing William Shakespeare and Anne Hathaway as narrators in the new musical itself however, the worldwide and modern play, & Juliet, changes up the narrative by allowing Juliet to change her own fate in Shakespeare’s classic and empowering her to finally make her own decisions. Opting to begin again with Juliet's equally-resolved group, the characters are opened up to a new way of life beyond what the group of friends were accustomed to after they move to Paris, France.
Having been produced four centuries after the original, '& Juliet' also applies modernized execution that appeals to a younger audience. To drive its point across to its viewers, the play showcases a set of numbers from pop music’s best producer, Max Martin. The Swedish songwriter and producer already had an idea of creating a musical around all his songs over his career, resulting in the musical being created and afterwards premiering in the year 2019. Max Martin was very liberal in the renditions of his songs to the play, expressing how he “wished for '& Juliet' to have its own unique identity, and to make audiences feel that even if his songs are performed differently, the audience should completely follow everything.” '& Juliet' now has the songs from chart-topping artists including Katy Perry, Ke$ha, P!nk, and The Backstreet Boys, among others. Due to this, the musical enabled a new way to appeal to a different audience to West End.
