It's an all-you-can-love Tchaikovsky buffet, and you simply can't miss it!
The chefs behind it all:
Maestro Rossen Milanov is much respected across the world, having worked with some of the greatest and most successful symphony orchestras. Under his leadership, the Columbus Symphony Orchestra is a total feast of extraordinary talent and passion, upholding the highest standard of musicianship.
Aubree Oliverson is one of the most dynamic, captivating, and accomplished and acclaimed performing artists of this generation. Under her hands, the violin becomes much more than a mere instrument: she manages to “capture its varied moods with passion, fire, tenderness, and sorrow” effortlessly, holding the audience captive in the palm of her hand.
And on the menu?
For starters: The incredible Prelude from the illustrious Tchaikovsky’s beloved opera in three acts, ‘The Queen of Spades’ opus 68. The opera’s libretto is based upon the 1834 literary work of the same name by Alexander Pushkin. The opera premiered in 1890 in St. Petersburg, Russia. The Prelude is masterful and menacing at the same time, quiet and elegant, and delights time after time.
The entrée: The much-adored Violin Concerto in D major, opus 35, featuring the incredibly talented Aubree Oliverson as soloist. This concerto is the only concerto composed by Tchaikovsky and quickly became an audience and soloist favorite after its initial mixed-reaction premiere in 1881 in Vienna. It is extremely captivating – from the charming and warm first theme to the rollercoaster second theme, from simple and melodic moments to lively and dancelike patterns, from extreme passion to an earthy tone – there’s never a dull moment.
And for dessert: The treasured symphony Tchaikovsky himself hailed as his best work, Symphony no. 6 in B minor, opus 74, better known as the ‘Pathétique’. Being the swan song of the composer who passed away just nine days after leading its premiere in St. Petersburg, Russia, the work is masterful and enigmatic, dramatic, poetic, and incredibly imaginative. This symphony forms part of the world’s most beloved symphonic repertoire today.
