When the two main subjects of all art collide within one work, something breathtaking is bound to see the light. If a powerful message that must be heard is added to that, it becomes a force that can change the world.
This is Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem, and it must be heard.
And not just heard - experienced, soul-deep.
The Columbus Symphony is breathing life into some of the greatest musical works of all time this concert season, and what is sealing the deal this time around, is their performance of the monumental work that has been selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”.
In a nutshell: The Columbus Symphony is bringing the Britten War Requiem to the Ohio Theatre Columbus on 24 May 2025, performed as the composer intended.
Tickets are priced from only $15, and at that price there’s no doubt - this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and you have to experience it in person!

The Britten War Requiem.
A work so monumental, so powerful, and so incredible that it has been described as a musical force. It drives an incredibly important message home, and reaches deep down to soul-level. It unmasks the truth for what it is, and serves as testament to Britten’s lifelong pacifism. It is a wall of sound that hits the soul and heart with unbelievable power. It is haunting, unsettling, and chilling to the bone, and truly magnificent.
It's a work so different from anything else you’ve ever experienced. Apart from the fact that it was performed for the consecration of the new Coventry Cathedral in Warwickshire, built after the original was destroyed during a bombing raid during World War II, Britten juxtaposed the traditional Latin text and forms of the Latin Mass for the Dead with the anti-war poetry of Wilfred Owen, an English soldier killed in action just one week before the Armistice that ended World War I.
The Britten War Requiem.
A work that employs such a unique musical force, that anyone who experiences it, is bound to be immensely moved. Whilst the work is scored for a full symphony, a chamber orchestra, three soloists, a choir, a boys’ choir and an organ, it is initially divided into three separate forces, uniquely placed for the sake of effect, alternating and interacting. The real power, however, lies in the final movement - and nothing can prepare you for it.
The Britten War Requiem.
“My subject is War, and the pity of War.
The Poetry is in the pity…
All a poet can do today is warn.”
The Columbus Symphony heeds the warning, and under the baton of music director and conductor Rossen Milanov, chorus director Stephen Caracciolo, and director Jeanne Wohlgamuth, and with the talents of soprano Abigail Rethwisch, tenor Jonathan Burton, and baritone Andrew Garland, the Britten War Requiem is being brought to life once more.
The stunning, historic Ohio Theatre Columbus is the perfect venue for a performance of this caliber. With its 2,791 seats spread across the orchestra floor, loge, mezzanine, and balcony, every seat is perfect to experience the magnitude and absolute brilliance of the Britten War Requiem.
