A wonderful evening filled to the brim with breath-taking music with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra is on the cards!

The professional orchestra has been hailed as one of the United States’ finest ensembles, with as many as 90 of the highest caliber of musicians in its employ. With music director and conductor Rossen Milanov at the helm, audiences can always be certain of a first-class experience.

John Corigliano’s Phantasmagoria for Cello & Orchestra is in essence an arrangement of the music from his opera, “The Ghosts of Versailles”. With the same form as the opera, Phantasmagoria is a journey from the most fantastic to the realistic. From the spectral ghost music, the sliding harmonies and cluster chords of the first section, to the eccentric passages of great virtuosity of the second and third sections – Phantasmagoria is a masterpiece, delivered to perfection by cellist Sterling Elliott.

Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Eroica” is a symphonic legend, composed as a memorial - before Beethoven defaced the symphony’s dedication in great disappointment - to the heroic achievements of a ruler he hoped would inspire Europe to a humanist, libertarian, and egalitarian revolution.

The “Eroica” is a vastly complex piece that is both great music and a force beyond music. From the heroic struggles beautifully portrayed in shattering dissonances and rhythmic dislocations in the first movement, to the sorrowful second movement, its expressive grandeur and terror; from the open-air energy and teeming imagination of the third movement and its challenging horn parts, to the gigantic expressive range – comic to tragic to lyrical to heroic – of the fourth movement and its set of variations that reinvent the symphonic finale in a way that arguably only the last movement of Beethoven’s 9th come close to – the “Eroica” is a victory that goes beyond Napoleon Bonaparte, Beethoven’s disappointment in the ruler, and Beethoven himself: it is a victory for the symphonic genre as a whole.
