The venue holds a rich legacy of hosting some of the best performances around, landing it the title of ‘Official Theatre of the State of Ohio’. While the Ohio Theatre regularly hosts a wide array of events, it is home to the illustrious Columbus Symphony. With seating spread across four levels – the orchestra floor, loge, mezzanine, and balcony – the Ohio Theatre offers the best acoustics, views, and experiences around.
World-renowned conductor and music director Rossen Milanov will once again head up the Columbus Symphony, with concertmaster Joanna Frankel and principal oboist Hugo Souza as soloists, in an program set to wow music lovers from all walks of life.
Joan Towers’ well-known ‘Duets’ is a wonderful essay in tone, exploring the idea of pairing a soloist with the first chair player in featured cadenzas. The work is divided into four sections and has the feel of a traditional concerto grosso.
Johann Sebastian Bach's extraordinary Concerto for Oboe & Violin in C Minor has been enthralling audiences for aeons with its timeless beauty. With its captivating melodies and intricate harmonies, the concerto is much like a vibrant musical conversation between two different instruments engaging as equals. The first movement is filled with exuberant, weaving scale-like lines, showcasing the genius of Bach, while the second is tender and longing in character, with the contention and cooperation of instruments moving side by side. The third movement takes musical flight as a jubilant bourrée with crisply defined rhythms, set to elevate.
Johannes Brahms’ First Symphony in C Minor is an undisputed, ground-breaking masterpiece of the highest order and the epitome of Romantic symphony composing. While the first movement is a complex web of conflicting ideas – from a wistful calm to an incredible energetic drive, from ominous moments to power and extraordinary tension followed by a wonderful relief, the second movement employs beautiful, almost ‘autumnal’ melodies and the third nothing but graciousness. The intense, profound fourth movement builds to a stunning, breath-taking and satisfying ending.
