The Columbus Symphony is known for their extraordinary talent and exceptional performances all year round. Get ready for a wonderful evening with the orchestra that has been hailed as one of North America’s finest musical ensembles, under the masterful leadership of award-winning maestro Thomas Wilkins!
Considered one of Aaron Copland’s finest works on American subjects, “Appalachian Spring” is a cornerstone in the American classical music repertoire. Sketching a musical scenario about a celebration in a small Appalachian settlement in 19th-century Pennsylvania, the work was exceptionally well received at its premiere in 1944, earning Aaron Copland a Pulitzer Prize for Music.
“Appalachian Spring” is much loved for its atmospheric depiction of America’s wide open spaces, its warmth, and the sense of community. Touching on universal themes such as faith, love, the anxiety and despair paired with war, as well as the joys and challenges of creating a new life, “Appalachian Spring” has earned its place in every music lover’s library. The work famously utilizes “Shaker” themes, famously developing the melody of “Simple Gifts” through stunning variations.
Audiences will also be treated to Michael Doherty’s “Letters from Lincoln," composed in celebration of the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birthday. The work is a musical portrait of a man who expressed his vision with eloquence, with the hope that the human spirit would overcome prejudice and differences in opinion to create a better world for all. Abraham Lincoln’s words have been masterfully set to music and are slated to be performed by the talented baritone, Yazid Gray.
Renowned Czech composer Antonín Dvořák’s poetic, charming Eighth Symphony is filled with the composer’s reflections on nature and life. Drawing on the style and structure of the Czech-romantic tradition, the work teems with tunes that appeal straight to the musical pleasure zones of any listener, whether knowledgeable in the field of classical music or not.
The historic 2,791-seat Ohio Theatre is regarded as the “Official Theatre of the State of Ohio." With its wide variety of world-renowned performances, audiences are treated to anything their hearts desire – from ballet to classical music, from pop concerts to musicals. With seating spread across four levels – the orchestra floor, loge, mezzanine, and balcony – there are seats suitable to every taste and budget, guaranteeing the best experience possible.
