A Beautiful Noise – The Neil Diamond Musical at Ohio Theatre

The Broadway show, written by the lauded playwright Anthony McCarten, was directed by Robert Gaudio and the two-time Tony Award-winner Ken Davenport. With over 6 decades of Diamond’s music, the team created a “musical collage” with showtunes that take on "lives of their own”, as McCarten stated in an interview with The Boston Globe. 

This magical 2h 15m adventure comprises two acts. The first act ends with the beloved number Sweet Caroline, followed by a 15 min intermission. Use this time to grab food and drink, rejoin the show for one more hour of beautiful songs and engaging performances.

The Production

Many lifelong lovers of Neil Diamond still remember when his 1976 album, A Beautiful Noise, was first released. Those same fans will never forget seeing the musical of the same name LIVE as it came to Columbus. The jukebox musical entranced audiences from the very beginning with a mesmerizing Broadway show and catchy songs. 

Afterward, the production took on Broadway, which lastest from late 2022 into early 2024 at the Broadhurst Theatre. Famed actors like Will Swenson (playing Neil Diamond), Mark Jacoby (present-day Diamond), and Linda Powell (The Doctor) reprised their roles after the Boston production. 

The musical swiftly took to the road. Now, new faces make up the traveling cast, including the American Idol winner, Nick Fradiani. Fradiani announced he would play the role of the young Neil Diamond. 

The Story

The tale follows the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Famer, starting in the present dayreminiscing from a therapist’s office. As Diamond, he explains how he can no longer sing like he used, as the therapist helps him cope with that realization throughout A Beautiful Noise. 

The production goes all the way back to Diamond's childhood days, examining his introduction to music and all the good and bad times since then, including his rise to stardom and struggle with depression. But, what long-time Diamond lovers anticipate most is re-experiencing Diamond’s catalog of hits in the Neil Diamond Musical.

Awards & Reviews

While the Broadway show was nominated for Outstanding Production of a Musical by the Drama League Awards and Outstanding New Broadway Musical, the actors were the real stars. Hoggett, Hurder, and LeProtto won Outstanding Ensemble in a Broadway Show for their dance routines. Other nominations include the Drama Desk Award and Drama League Awards.
