& Juliet – Musical at Ohio Theatre

Set side by side with the previous known story of the Shakespearean play which debuted live on stage roughly forty decades ago, critics have discerned the stark alterations that had been applied to ‘& Juliet’, a significantly more contemporary musical based on the same female lead. Shakespeare’s original plot centers around the tragic events that comes about because of rash decision-making and the blind passion of two lovers, which results in the deaths of both Romeo and Juliet. On the other hand, ‘& Juliet’ looks beyond the said tragedy and instead embraces a more positive outlook by focusing on the boundless possibilities of life, even after such tragic experiences.

This messaging is evident in the new productionl’s cast of characters, Juliet, and her clique of friends, who head to Paris to embrace their identities not just as individuals, but as strong women. ‘& Juliet’ is a good feminist flip through the eyes of Shakespeare’s wife, Anne Hathaway, who takes ownership of her husband’s tale and alters the ending of his beloved classic. She gives both old characters from the original story a second opportunity to shine, while bringing in new and equally empowered women to the cast. Going off-script from Romeo & Juliet, the play is able to incorporate contemporary culture, specifically songs from recent decades, that reflect the growing awareness and self-discovery of each of the leading ladies throughout the show. Even the fashion worn by the production’s leading cast give a nod to Romeo & Juliet, while showing the contrast between the new production and the previous classic by contrasting Elizabethan fashion and iconography with today’s clothing styles. Each aspect of the production was carefully thought-out to promote empowerment and "being able to write your own story".

This February’s limited season of ‘& Juliet’ sees it come to Ohio, where Ohio Theatre of Columbus is proud to feature this up-and-coming jukebox musical on Sunday 23rd February 2025. Known in the entire Ohio area by locals as the premier venue for staged show's, Ohio Theatre is a large theater with a huge seating capacity while having the most spectacular architecture both inside and outside the venue.
