Moulin Rouge Synopsis
Set in Paris at the turn of the 20th century in 1899, the story follows a young English poet called Christian who is infatuated with Satine, cabaret actress and courtesan, who is the star of the Moulin Rouge club, “where all your dreams come true”. As the tale unfolds, Christian arrives at the cabaret club with fellow bohemians Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Santiago the Argentinean. At the same time, the show introduces the money-motivated Duke of Monroth.
Moulin Rouge is about a romantic tale between two forbidden lovers. While Satine falls in love with the poor English poet, she has been promised to the Duke by her manager in return for funding the next production of the cabaret show. As the young lovers rendezvous in secret, the dancer’s wedding day draws closer and closer. However, Satine is hiding a fatal secret from both Christian and the Duke.
Just like the 2001 movie, the Broadway show’s score blends together original songs with popular hits, including musical numbers that have been produced in the 22 years since the movie’s debut.
